Priyanka Chopra confirmed for Zanjeer
Subhash K Jha | Apr 12, 2012, 12.00AM IST

On Wednesday morning Priyanka Chopra was signed to play the lead role in the new-age version of Zanjeer to be directed by Apoorva Lakhia.

According to sources from the project,Priyanka's role would be a far cry from Jaya Bhaduri's chakku-churee walee in the original Zanjeer.

Says a source, "Priyanka will play a woman of today. She will be cast as a US-returned owner of a cafe. Though she will be dressed most glamorously she won't be doing any songs or item numbers."

Interestingly Priyanka has been paid on a par with the film's leading man Ramcharan Teja: close to Rs 6 crores for both the Telugu and Hindi versions of Zanjeer.

Our very reliable sources tell us that Teja has promised to help Priyanka with her Telugu if she promises to help him with his Hindi.

Zanjeer's co-producer Amit Mehra confirmed the casting of Priyanka Chopra.

Film: Agent Vinod

Director: Sriram Raghavan

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Adil Hussain, Prem Chopra, Shahbaz Khan

Rating: ***

“Yaadon ki baarat disturb karne ke liye sorry,” says Agent Vinod (Saif Ali Khan) to a teary-eyed Dr Iram Bilal (Kareena Kapoor), who has returned to homeland Pakistan (after being away for 15 years). Pakistan is just another country as they inch closer to cracking a terror plot. The lines are among the roughly three or four chuckle-worthy scenes that the otherwise chic (appearance wise) yet scraggly (plot wise) Agent Vinod has to offer.

Espionage tales know no boundaries and locations the exotic the better. Agent Vinod is no different. Afghanistan. Russia. Morocco. Pakistan. UK. New Delhi. A Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) officer, Agent Vinod is on a mission to stop an impending nuclear war.

The premise of the film and the potency of Agent Vinod is established in the beginning with an introductory (not to mention pointless) gun battle in Afghanistan. Every new country has a new lead, more sinister faces than the first one and clue to what next. David Kazaan (Prem Chopra), Colonel (Adil Hussain), Abu Nazer (Ram Kapoor) waltz in and out of the film.

For those interested in the story, the plot is simple. There’s a bomb that will inevitably explode and kill several Indians (it’s convenient considering our population). Agent Vinod must stop that. While at it, he must fall in love, so he has a purpose to seek revenge. Anything more and we step into spoiler territory.

Director Sriram Raghavan (Ek Hasina Thi, Johnny Gaddar) delivers a neat package, a suave lead hero slogging it out in picture-perfect locations, packing punches here and there, zooming off on sexy bikes, sexier cars and finally a copter, all in a day’s work. Saif looks and acts the part like a boss, his unwavering focus and diligence thoroughly a treat to watch. In comparison, Kareena becomes an uneven ally thanks to misplaced expressions. Cheesy conversations between them take away from the built-up severity. Adil Hussain as Colonel stands out for an understated yet impressive performance.

Written by Raghavan and Arijit Biswas, Agent Vinod is fairly engaging, if not memorable. The dialogue is passable but works only because of Saif. Pooja Ladha Surti’s editing is slick, but the length is repulsive. One question sticking out like a sore thumb is: Why didn’t Agent Vinod shoot dead Colonel in the basement when he clearly could? This could have magically cut the film by an hour and a half. Pointers to a sequel are shamelessly exposed, so no surprises if an announcement to the effect is soon made.

Technically, the film is as polished as our refined hero. Daniel B George’s background score provides the perfect setting for a suspense-thriller, while Pritam’s music (okay, let’s forget all those plagiarism charges for a minute) aids the existence of the love angle. Rabtais beautiful, while Dil Mera Muft Ka and Pungi are a tad annoying. The fight sequence set toRabta is exceptionally executed. The murder of Boney M’s Rasputin is unforgivable.

Agent Vinod is smartly put together and works because of Saif. That is enough reason for you to go watch it.

Bollywood beauty Kareena Kapoor who is currently basking on the success of Salman Khan’s ‘Bodyguard’ and Shah Rukh Khan ‘Ra.One’ lately admitted that she owes her success to the two leading Khans of Bollywood. She has also admitted that unlike actor Vidya Balan she cannot lead a women army and is glad that she has support of Khans.

In her recent media interaction Bebo was quizzed about whether she would have ever consider Vidya’s role in Milan Luthria’s ‘The Dirty Picture’ and the 31-year-old reacted saying ‘I would have love to portray Silk’s role, but yes not without Salman or Shah Rukh, as I am not that confident whether I could pull off the movie entirely on my shoulders. I will ensure whether Salman or Shah Rukh would be a part of it so that even if my acting fails, Khan’s existence in the movie would help the movie’.

Meanwhile, Bebo is also thankful to her fans and god who has helped the leggie lass to establish her as an actor.
Vidya Balan's 'Kahaani' declared a hit

New Delhi: After being appreciated for her performance in female-centric 'Ishqiya', 'No One Killed Jessica' and 'The Dirty Picture', actress Vidya Balan carries forwards the legacy of hits with 'Kahaani', which has reportedly collected Rs 2.95 crore on its opening day.

Released on March 9, the drama-thriller made on a shoestring budget of Rs 8 crore is receiving positive response from both the critics and audiences.

"The film has opened very well. The collection in India on Friday was Rs 2.95 crore and on Saturday it earned Rs 4.5 crore. A full-pack show is expected on Sunday. The film will definitely survive for over a week," Taran Adarsh told IANS.

In director Sujoy Ghosh's Vidya is cast as a software programmer. She comes to Kolkata from London in search of her husband, who is the father of her unborn child.

Gautam Dutta, COO, PVR said that the film has superseded their expectation.

"The response we are getting for the film is phenomenal. There are families coming together to watch the movie. And since it is a women-centric film, there are group of females coming to watch the film. We are expecting a 80 percent occupancy all over India on weekend, which is something we did not expect. And the film should be able to do a good business," Dutta told IANS.

It is being co-distributed by Pen India Pvt Ltd, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Boundscript Motion Pictures Pvt Ltd.

"'Kahaani' is a film that is made for serious and sensible cinegoers. Vidya's performance is being appreciated by audience. The film is not entertaining like 'The Dirty Picture', that is why it has a niche audience. But it will not only recover its cost but also earn profits," said Delhi based distributor Joginder Mahajan.

If the story and Viday's charma are attracting audiences, distributor Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts Ltd says word of mouth is also helping the film a lot in gaining success.

"It is houseful in multiplexes and we are expecting collection of Rs.5 crore on Sunday. It is the word of mouth that is bringing people to the theaters," Ghai said.

As no big releases are scheduled for next week, sop Ghai feels absence of biggies at the box office will also help 'Kahaani' in strengthening its position at the ticket window.

"Since there is no big release next week, it is expected the movie will earn a good amount of profit," he added.

Salman Khan might reign at the box-office, but when it comes to awards, the actor always gets short shrift. He’s in the Rs. 100 crore club, has been in the Hindi film industry for more than two decades, has a huge fan following, but he hasn’t won a single award for Best Actor.

Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Amitabh Bachchan are just among the few Bollywood personalities who have received the Padma Shri. While Sallu is more known for his masala roles, he has given poignant performances in films like Tere Naam, Phir Milenge and others. So has the actor been ignored at awards at the national level as well? Is Salman’s performance being overlooked because of his brush with crime? Does Salman Khan actually deserve a Padma Shri?

Anyway, I've opened it now just so I could post the following.

I've just had the shock of my life! A really die-hard, and I mean die-hard of the die-hards, fan of SRK has just posted her reactions to Ra.One at the Bollywhat forum, and she didn't like it! I can't tell you how mindboggling and unbelievable this is to me. Over the years, both when I was there myself and after I left, she has leaped into the fray as soon as any hint of non-adoring (not even actually negative) comment came about, to defend SRK. You have to understand, this is not even like some of us here who don't like this or that movie of Salman's, because she can never, and I mean NEVER, see anything wrong in anything SRK does. He can make the most insulting, outrageous snide remarks about anybody, he can make the crudest, most vulgar "jokes", and she'll only say, "Oh, people don't appreciate SRK's humor." She loves anything and everything he's done, even commercials. So for someone like that to say that she didn't like his film, his "dream project", is just unimaginable.

Also, she's Tamilian, and, as big a fan as she is, and as much as she has defended SRK's Tamilian stereotypes and "jokes" in films like OSO, this time she didn't like the Tamilian stereotype, and actually said it reminded her of her painful childhood experiences growing up in Mumbai, when she was teased about being Tamilian. Now, even from the promos, it was clear that this would probably be an offensive stereotype, at least to thinking people or people from the south, and some scenes mentioned in the reviews confirmed that, but wow, for her to say she is actually offended by something in an SRK film, when she has previously dismissed all other complaints against his offensive comments as just part of his unique sense of humor, is just -- mindboggling. I guess SRK really is alienating his normal fanbase with this film.

Posting that video of Salman's shirtless action scenes (in the Bodyguard thread) gave me the idea for this poll.

It's been clear for some time now that Salman takes his shirt off in films for his fans, but he realizes it's all a game and even a joke, so he likes to infuse a bit of fun or mischief into the way his shirt comes off in his films now. So vote for the most creative way his shirt comes off from the following films:

1. JEM -- Salman visits various studios without luck, then gets a role when he takes off his shirt

2. Partner -- Salman making the airport security machine beep and takes off his shirt, saying, "I'm always looking for a chance to do this!"

3. London Dreams -- Again going through an airport security check, Salman is forced to disrobe due to a coin he swallowed when he was a kid.

4. Wanted -- shirt is set on fire by the villain, so Salman has to take it off.

5. Dabangg -- shirt comes off of its own accord, when Salman sees Sonu Sood's body in the final fight.

6. Ready -- shirt comes off in Asin's imagination during the fight at the wedding.

7. Bodyguard -- well, you'll see how it comes off!

Which of the above is the cleverest/funniest/most enjoyable way Salman's shirt comes off?

I vote for Ready, but I'd like to see what others have to say.

Oh, and if you have more nominations, post them here. Just remember that they have to be tongue-in-cheek, not straight, like in Karan Arjun or Veergati or TNBP.

Movie Reviews .. DELHI BELLY

By Taran Adarsh, June 30, 2011 - 12:37 IST

Much before I watched DELHI BELLY, I was told very categorically that the film will reduce to rubble the image of Aamir Khan, the producer, which he has very painstakingly and meticulously built over the years. I disagree with this viewpoint. Sure, Aamir Khan steps into a territory that is least expected of him. Agree, DELHI BELLY is expletive-ridden, has several scandalous moments which give you a 440 volt ka jhatka and is just not for the faint-hearted. But DELHI BELLY is not outrageous just for the sake of it. It doesn't shock for effect. The truth is, DELHI BELLY has a novel story to tell and the cuss words/outrageous moments are integral to the plotline and have been juxtaposed seamlessly in the narrative.

Let me introduce you to DELHI BELLY. It is Bollywood's most daring, cheeky, irreverent, blasphemous, raunchy youth film to date and the lurid content, I am certain, has never been witnessed on the Hindi screen before. Even some hugely popular reality shows that have the participants using the most appalling, colorful lingo to garner attention and TRPs, would pale into insignificance. Belonging to the same genre as THE HANGOVER and LOCK, STOCK & TWO SMOKING BARRELS, DELHI BELLY is the ultimate culture shock for Indian audiences. It is a raucous, boisterous, potty-mouthed caper featuring the antics of three hapless young men.

DELHI BELLY is a verbally explosive comical crime-caper, with a smart screenplay and witty dialogue as its aces. It is funny, has a lot of energy and most importantly, as you protest that Hindi movies thrive on beaten-to-death formula, a film like DELHI BELLY defies the stereotype and comes alive with a brand new recipe [writer: Akshat Verma]. The writing is airtight and the movie moves from one episode to another furiously. Original in style and thoroughly entertaining, backed by colorful characters and superior acting, there's no film quite like this one or should I say, there is no film that matches the sheer brilliance of DELHI BELLY. It's a top-quality comical thriller made with guts and gusto. I can assure, you will exit the auditorium with a grin on your face.

If a film like DELHI BELLY works -- which I am sure, it will -- it will propel film-makers to explore this untapped genre of cinema. It will encourage them to push the boundaries and undertake risks. It will usher in a new era of comedies of this kind that have never been explored on the Hindi screen.

Tashi [Imran Khan], Arup [Vir Das] and Nitin [Kunal Roy Kapur] -- flat mates, buddies and partners in crime. Tashi is to get married in a month to the glamorous Sonia [Shenaz Treasury]. Arun has been dumped by his girlfriend and also has an annoying boss [whose idea of creativity is sketching a smiling banana]. And Nitin is about to discover that eating delicious Tandoori Chicken off a street vendor is going to give him the worst case of Delhi Belly he's ever known!

Three regular blokes lead a regular life, except when they get on the hit list of a deadly crime syndicate [Vijay Raaz].

Director Abhinay Deo and writer Akshat Varma may have been inspired by the adult comedies of Hollywood, but DELHI BELLY is an Indian film at heart. The characters are very Indian and the humor, equally desi. As a matter of fact, there are situations and dialogue that the desis would take to instantly -- it's inherently Indian. Aimed squarely at the youth brigade, DELHI BELLY makes an undisguised, earnest attempt to woo this segment of moviegoers. What really works is its screenplay that packs one twist after another. You are as clueless as the on-screen characters about what's in store next. Also, the humor is very on the face and sardonic. It's not one of those humor-laden films that we've been subjected to of late. Here, the makers don't underline a joke, you need to be intelligent enough to comprehend it. This film speaks a language that the youth would connect with instantly and perhaps, it may go down as a cult film in its genre.

In terms of visuals, DELHI BELLY has been filmed at real locations and the DoP captures the essence of Delhi extremely well. The eye-candy locales are clearly missing here. Instead, what we get to watch are real locations, real lower middle class surroundings and the crammed bylanes of Delhi.

Much has been said and spoken about the music of DELHI BELLY. Let me add my bit. After delivering a likeable score in LUV KA THE END, Ram Sampat goes completely innovative and inventive with the soundtrack of this film. 'DK Bose' stands out and is the anthem of the youth. 'Jaa Chudail' is peppy and energetic, while the Aamir Khan track in the end credits ['I Hate You'] is more of a tribute to the disco era of the 1980s, when the Bappi-Mithun combo reigned supreme.

On the flip side, a film like DELHI BELLY may not be savored and relished by everyone. It's not for, what we label in filmi parlance, 'family audiences'. In fact, it might get a bit embarrassing to watch a film like DELHI BELLY with one's family thanks to the generous usage of expletives and toilet humor. Also, the hugely popular 'DK Bose' and 'Nakkaddwale Disco, Udhaarwale Khisko' songs merely play in the background and I for one sorely missed the eye-catching videos of these two tracks in the movie.

DELHI BELLY is a boy's film predominantly [although the women have key roles to play] and boy's films are always fun. The chemistry between the three actors is what makes the script come alive. In fact, I won't be wrong in stating that their sense of humor is very much in sync with each other. This is Imran's best work to date, no two opinions on it. Vir Das is incredible. Kunal Roy Kapur is the scene-stealer actually. As a matter of fact, the performances by these three actors will be the talking point once the film releases.

Shenaz Treasury acts well. Poorna Jagannathan gets into the skin of the character and catches your eye. Vijay Raaz is exceptional. Paresh Ganatra [the landlord] is equally competent. Rahul Singh is perfect. The Aamir Khan song is imaginatively filmed.

On the whole, DELHI BELLY is a ground-breaking and inventive comic caper targeted at the youth brigade. People who can't absorb brazen, grimy and unabashed language might abhor it; in fact, it's not for the straitlaced moralists or purists. It's for those who have a strong belly, with an appetite for adult comedy and cuss words. Its wittiness may astound and astonish you. I viewed the Hinglish version, but I understand that the Hindi interpretation of the movie is so impactful that it renders you speechless. Eventually, DELHI BELLY works big time predominantly for the reason that it's a pioneering motion picture, an incredible film that dares to pierce into an untapped and brand new terrain. The unblemished, racy screenplay coupled with super performances and a chartbusting musical score will make it a WINNER all the way.

I want to work with Salman, SRK: Madhuri

We have seen the reach and impact of a Rajinikant film. Inspite of it all, Bollywood's dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit gave an opportunity of working with the South legend a pass! Reason. She didn't want to play his sister's role.

However, our diva is game for working with her Bollywood co-stars like Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.

Infact Mads has become a huge fan of Sallu especially after his recent movies like `Wanted' and `Dabangg'.

She even has a special request for filmmakers. "It'll be wonderful to work with Salman and Shah Rukh again...three of us together in one film. I hope some good script comes our way. It'll be so much fun", says Madhuri recalling the chemistry she created with the duo in `Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam'.

Madhuri starred opposite SRK and Sallu in the romantic drama `Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam' in the late nineties. She's also individually worked with SRK in Anjaam, `Dil toh Pagal Hai', Koyla, Gaja Gamini and Devdas while she epitomized romance in `Sajaan', Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, opposite Salman.

"I am aware of the growing popularity of Salman these days. I have seen his recent films. My kids just love it. Salman deserves every bit of his super success today. I really want to work with him if there's a script" she admits candidly.

The actress shares a lovely friendship with both these actors. Marvelling at how well the actors have maintained themselves and are matching steps with younger girls she says. "It's awesome to see all my heroes' getting younger by day and romancing the young girls. It's incredible", signs off Madhuri with a smile.

As much as I like Madhuri (perhaps I should say, used to like her), this interview really made me angry. She has given the biggest hit of her career with Salman in a film that is iconic to Hindi films to this day, but when she came on Koffee with Karan, she couldn't stop gushing about SRK and how she wants to work with him, and, if she was to wake up as Karan (what a horrible prospect for her!) the first thing she would do was to sign Madhuri opposiet SRK. I actually thought it was degrading for a star of her stature (even if she has been away for some years) to resort to that kind of begging. She also said she wants to work with Aamir, because they had great films like Dil together. Not a mention of Salman, except in response to a question from Karan (who, for once, just couldn't ignore the elephant in the room that is HAHK, and so had to ask her about working with Salman as well).

So now Salman has two huge hits and she wants to work with him again? Worse, she even says (if the quotes are accurate), that she wants to work with him because of Wanted and Dabangg. Oh, excuse me. She wants to work with both Salman and SRK, because of that scintillating masterpiece they did together, HTHS.
The ‘Dabangg’ girl Sonakshi Sinha has grabbed more awards for her debut film than any other newcomer, and it seems that she is unable to get over the Chulbul Pandey craze till now, as she was seen sporting Salman’s heart shaped goggles of ‘Dabangg’ in her upcoming venture ‘Joker’.

The goggles were sported by Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) in the promotional posters of ‘Dabangg’, and they even became a fashion statement for many Sallu fans.

“If that's not enough, the actress will even be seen gyrating on an item song in desi choli and ghagra, just like Munni of Dabangg,” reported a source.

Veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter has for sure got a hangover of her debut movie and is also all praises for her mentor Salman.

Sonakshi has no problem with other actresses
Meanwhile, though reports claimed that the actress has a problem with her co-actresses in the film industry, Sonakshi denied the gossips and said that it was all cooked up and she had no problem with other actresses.

"Every morning I wake up wondering who is going to be the next person I am supposed to be fighting with. It's better to just focus on work," said the actress.

The rumors about her cat fight with the ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ famed Anushka Sharma and ‘Veer’ famed Zarine Khan, have also been slammed by Sonakshi.

Elizabeth Taylor

I've been depressed since last night about Elizabeth Taylor's death. Today, I've finally got myself to where I can start reading the articles about her. I came across this:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/obit...4_CV_N.htm

As I read it though, I was struck by how similar Elizabeth Taylor's life was to Salman's. (yes, I have Salman on the brain all the time; you're surprised?)

Look at some of the things the article says:

"There's such a tendency to diminish her talent while looking at her stardom. I don't think they have to be separated, they're one and the same. But you can't escape the awesome power of her stardom."

"The level of her fame and glamour and the sheer dazzle of the woman was unparalleled. I don't know if we'll have that kind of movie stardom again."

"She was so remarkable at making us care equally about her personal life as much as we cared about her movies. We got it all with her."

But she didn't court the attention. "She wasn't a calculating diva," Mann adds. "She got the media exposure because of the way she lived her life. She wasn't out there seeking it. It came to her."

"When her friends started dying of AIDS, at the time people wouldn't even mention the word ... she not only mentioned it, she shouted it from the rooftop. She had an extraordinary moral compass."

"She had great lust for life — when she fell in love, she fell in love hard,"

"Hers was the fully lived life," "To me, her life spelled passion. She lived by her heart and died by her heart."

Can't all these things be said of Salman, as well? though fortunately he's still alive.

(And yes, yet one more similarity to Salman: even on such a sad and solemn occasion, some idiots couldn't stop themselves from making snarky comments.)
