Preity goes back to school

18 Jan 2008, 0000 hrs IST,SUBHASH K JHA ,TNN

Hollywood does it all the time. But it’s rare to see Bollywood stars taking time off to hone their acting skills. That’s exactly what Preity Zinta did for her role in Samir Karnik’s Heroes, the actress attended Anupam Kher’s acting school.

Anupam, who played Preity’s father in her first film Kya Kehna, confirmed the presence of his star pupil: “When she showed an interest in coming to my school, I was impressed, and I’d recommend a refreshers’ course in acting to a lot of our stars.”

Preity sees growth as an essential part of her journey as an actress. “I need to now step into another phase in my career. That’s why I’m doing a series of films that require me to discard my glamorous image. My role in Heroes needed me to speak in a special language that I’m not familiar with. I also needed to change my body language and my entire approach to acting. That’s why I went to Anupam. We’re both from Simla and we both have a hunger to excel. I attended his school and, it did me a world of good.”

Preity will now assume a different physical look for every role. “You’ll see me looking totally different in all my films, whether it’s Har Pal or Last Lear,” she revealed. Incidentally, Preity looks like Rekha in the latter film and people can’t wait to ser her in this new avatar.

Re: The official Preity Zinta Topic
We’ve got it!

Preity Zinta and beau Ness Wadia are jubilant with their victory at the Indian Premiere League auction

If there is still any doubt on whether Preity Zinta and her business tycoon boyfriend Ness Wadia is a couple, this one is for you. Preity and Ness are busy celebrating their victory at the high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Preity and Ness, who have won the bid for the Chandigarh team jointly with Karan Paul (Apeejay) and Mohit Burman (Dabur) for reportedly a whooping $76 million (nearly Rs 3 billion), sounded ecstatic. The couple, when contacted, was together and seemed very happy, thus putting to rest all speculations about their supposed split. Preity gushes, “It was an unbelievable moment in our lives when the results were announced. Yes, we had a gut feeling that we will make it. But there is a difference in believing and achieving, isn't it?”

Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia outside the BCCI headquarters, yesterday

The Bombay Dyeing heir told this newspaper that it is too early to envisage when he will be ready with his team. “We have still to absorb the feeling that we have won. Preity and I love sports and are looking forward to promote a lot of young talent,” he says. To begin with, Ness will be appointing a team of professional coaches and advisors to look after the Chandigarh team. He will be taking personal interest in the selection of his team players. Preity, whose team will have Yuvraj Singh, is not disappointed that she and Ness did not win a bigger city like Mumbai or Kolkata. She explained, “I am from North and I always wanted the Chandigarh team. Mohali is a lovely ground, and we already have an exciting player in Yuvraj. What more do we want?”

Preity's wish-list also includes M S Dhoni and Sreesanth in her team. Explaining her interest in the IPL, she reveals that her partner Ness and she have been following sports from their childhood days. “I love cricket. I try to catch up with the latest scores as much as I can.”

The actress, who has just returned from Canada after having shot for Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth, is delighted that the Indians are giving the Kangaroos stiff competition in the present on-going series Down Under. “It's great to see that our cricketers are beating the Aussies in their den. I was feeling very low after India was eliminated from the World Cup last year, but thank God the scenario has changed for the better,” she says.

Preity feels that the IPL will improve the cricket scenario further. “Many players who haven't got sufficient exposure will now get a platform to showcase their talent. We are a land of 1.1 billion people and see the number of players we have. This needs to increase and the IPL will open a big window for that,” she says.

She further adds, “I also feel that other sports will be benefitted. If an IPL has come up for cricket today, it is possible that a similar thing will come into existence for other games too.”

Bollywood chants R-day mantra
Subhash K. Jha
Friday, January 25, 2008: (Mumbai):

Bollywood personalities Preity Zinta, J.P. Dutta and television actor Rajiv Khandelwal, who have army connections, say the Republic Day is very special to them. Others, however, feel that after 60 years of independence, the country should bring in some changes.

Preity Zinta: My dad was in the army and now my brother Dipankar is in the army. So I grew up in an atmosphere of soldierly pride. One of the perks of being an army child was that I got to do a Bharat Darshan early in my life. Every two years my father would get transferred, and we'd be in a different place. It was a great learning experience. The army is very close to my heart. Recently, when I was invited by NDTV to visit the soldiers on the border, I had a ball re-living my army life. Republic Day is very special to us. I still remember attending those early-morning parades in the chilly winter of Delhi. The day reminds us of how much we've achieved and how much we still need to do.
